DHAKA — Moazzem Hossain, former personal aide to sports adviser Asif Mahmood, is back under scrutiny over unusual transactions in his bank accounts.
Allegations that he amassed illegal wealth surfaced earlier this year.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) opened a probe after obtaining records showing irregular transfers through Hossain’s accounts, but the inquiry has stalled for several reasons. Earlier in the year, he was accused of acquiring illegal assets, exerting influence over transfers and promotions, taking commissions on ministry procurement and steering contracts to favored bidders.
The ACC collected his bank records and found significant irregular transactions. He appeared for questioning when summoned, but investigators were not satisfied with his explanations.
ACC sources said the inquiry has stalled because of foot-dragging by investigators, obstruction in collecting documents, inconsistent statements from the accused and political pressure. The commission has already changed the lead investigator three times. Another change is under consideration, and a special committee may be formed if needed.
Some leaders of the National Citizen Party (NCP) frequently visit the ACC to lobby on behalf of those accused, further complicating the inquiry, sources said.
ACC Director General (Prevention) Akter Hossain said a report would be issued once the inquiry is complete, but no timeline has been set.
