Death is an absolute truth from which no one can escape. However busy a person may be in this world, in the end he or she must descend into that silent room — the darkness of the grave. The grave is the first station of the afterlife, the starting point of either a journey of comfort or a trial of hardship. But remarkably, not everyone will face questioning there. Some fortunate people, by the special mercy of Allah, will remain free of the trial and questioning of the grave.

Who are they, and why will they receive this special honor? The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) clearly described several categories of such people. Knowing about them brings light to the heart and makes the hardships of this world feel easier to bear.

1. Those who die while guarding Islamic frontiers or borders

Salman al-Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) said he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say:

“Guarding the frontier for a day and a night is better than fasting and praying for a month. If a person dies while doing so, the reward of the deeds he was performing continues, his sustenance continues, and he is kept safe from the trial of the grave.” (Muslim 5047, Tirmidhi 1665, Nasa’i 3168)

These people, from the very first station after death, are counted among those who are safe.

2. Those martyred in the path of Allah

Miqdam ibn Madi Karib (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said the martyr has six privileges with Allah:

> He is forgiven from the moment his first drop of blood is shed

> He is shown his place in paradise

> He is spared the punishment of the grave

> He is kept safe from the great terror on the Day of Judgment

> A crown of dignity is placed on his head, each jewel of which is better than this world and all that is in it

> He is married to 72 of the maidens of paradise

> His intercession is accepted for 70 of his relatives (Tirmidhi 1663)

As soon as a martyr sheds his first drop of blood, he is forgiven, and the questioning of the grave does not touch him.
