DHAKA — Amid nationwide public anxiety over earthquakes, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department has now warned of a possible cyclone.

A well-marked low-pressure area is positioned over the southern Andaman Sea and adjoining areas, the forecast said. It may move west-northwestward and intensify further, becoming a depression on Monday. It could then deepen into a severe depression and develop into a cyclone, the office said.

Meteorologist Dr. Omar Faruq of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department told local media on Sunday evening that the current well-marked low-pressure area had a strong chance of developing into a cyclone. “It will turn into a depression tomorrow. Under its influence, rainfall is also possible across the country toward the end of the month,” he said.

Asked where the possible cyclone could make landfall, Faruq said it was expected to cross the coast through India’s Odisha or Andhra Pradesh, or through Bangladesh’s Chattogram. “In that case, both India and Bangladesh could be affected. It can be said more definitively once it becomes a severe depression,” he said.

Weather researcher Mostafa Kamal Palash wrote on his personal Facebook page that there was a strong likelihood of cyclone formation in the Bay of Bengal. The low-pressure area could progress through a depression, then a severe depression and finally into a cyclone, he said. According to the latest weather forecast, the possible cyclone could make landfall anywhere between India’s Andhra Pradesh and Bangladesh’s Chattogram coast, he said.

Because of the possible cyclone, light to moderate rainfall could occur across the country from November 30 to December 5, the forecast said.
