CHATTOGRAM — A leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-affiliated labor wing was shot and killed while returning home on a motorcycle in Chattogram’s Rangunia upazila, police said.

The victim, Abdul Mannan, 40, was vice president of the Sarafbhata union labor wing.

The shooting took place around 11 p.m. Sunday in the Bulinya Baperbari area of ward No. 6, Madhyam Sarafbhata, in the Sarafbhata union, police said.

According to police and local residents, passersby spotted Mannan lying with gunshot wounds in a secluded area beside the road. Officers recovered the body after being notified. The motorcycle he had been riding was also at the scene. Who shot him and why were not immediately known, police said.

Mannan, who had returned from working abroad, was involved in various businesses including the sand trade, according to local sources. Police said they initially suspect the killing was linked to a dispute over local political dominance.

Four bullet wounds were found on the body — one near the left eye, one on the left hand and two on the right side of the abdomen. Police sent the body to Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Sabbir Mohammad Selim, the officer in charge of South Rangunia Police Station, said why and by whom Mannan was shot was under investigation. Efforts are under way to identify and arrest those involved, he said.
