JASHORE — At least 10 people were injured when a long-running family and land dispute escalated into violence in Choughachha upazila of Jashore on Saturday afternoon, police said. A case was filed at Choughachha police station the same evening.
The incident took place in the Hauli Paschimpara field area under Pashapol union, according to the case statement. Residents of Hauli village had been in a dispute with neighbors over access to a road crossing seven bighas of land owned by Abdus Salam.
On the day of the incident, Salam went to the land in the afternoon with a tractor to plow the field. People from the opposing side blocked him, which led to a heated argument, the statement said.
According to the complaint, a group led by Ali Kadar attacked Salam with sharp weapons, machetes, iron rods and clubs. Salam’s wife, Shapla Khatun, was seriously injured when she was struck on the head with a sharp weapon. Salam was hit with an iron rod.
Two young men, Amit Hasan Dipto and Jilkat Ali, were also beaten when they tried to intervene, the statement said. At least 10 people from both sides were injured. Local residents took the injured, including Shapla Khatun, Amit Hasan Dipto and Abdus Salam, to Choughachha upazila government model hospital.
Doctors put 14 stitches in Shapla Khatun’s head and 25 stitches in Amit Hasan Dipto’s head, hospital staff said. The other injured received first aid.
