JASHORE, Bangladesh — Border Guard Bangladesh detained 10 people, including women and children, as they attempted to cross from India into Bangladesh through the fields of Indrapur village in Chougachha upazila, the agency said.
BGB personnel from the Hijli Border Outpost detained the group late Friday night. All those detained said they were Bangladeshi citizens.
Those detained were identified as Abu Sayed, 50, of Burihati village in Jashore’s Keshabpur upazila and his wife Chhakina Khatun, 43; Masura Khatun, 35, of Bara Kuput village in Satkhira district and her elder son Nur Jalal, 15, younger son Omar Faruk, 12, and daughter Minara Khatun, 7; and Rabbi Hasan, 22, of Terkhada upazila in Khulna, his wife Nasima Khatun, 18, their daughter Rahela Khatun, 2, and grandmother Meherun Bibi, 70.
“They were detained by patrol members as they tried to enter the country across the Indian border,” Hijli BOP commander Subedar Shahidul Islam said. He added that they had been charged with illegal entry and handed over to Chougachha police.
Chougachha police Officer-in-Charge Anwar Hossain confirmed the detentions and said the detainees had been sent to court.
The detainees told a reporter their homes were in Bangladesh and that they worked in various jobs in India. They said they were detained by BGB while returning home for a visit. Nur Jalal attends a madrasa in India, while Omar Faruk and Minara Khatun are enrolled in primary school there, they said.
