RAJSHAHI — Karima Khatun, the daughter of a day laborer from Rajshahi’s Durgapur upazila, has earned admission to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College in Barishal, an achievement that has drawn celebration in her village.

Karima, the only daughter of Abdul Karim Mondal, is from Alipur village in Naopara union of Durgapur upazila. She scored 78 on the 2024-2025 academic year medical (MBBS) admission test, securing her place at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College. She earlier passed her Secondary School Certificate exam from Belgharia High School in Durgapur upazila in 2021 and her Higher Secondary Certificate exam from the science section of Rajshahi Shah Makhdum College in 2023, earning a GPA of 5 in both.

Karima’s father, Abdul Karim Mondal, said he has two children, a daughter and a son. “My son has a physical disability and cannot move without a wheelchair. He has also passed his HSC,” he said. “I am a poor man. I live hand to mouth and work as a day laborer in others’ fields. I run my household with great hardship. Even so, I spared nothing in educating my two children.”

“By the mercy of Almighty Allah and with deep gratitude to my children’s teachers, my daughter has come this far through great hardship,” Mondal said. “Please pray for her, that she may become a great doctor and stand by the people.”

Karima said she has never been ashamed that her father is a day laborer. “I do not think of myself as small, because my father earns his living honestly,” she said. “There are two of us, and my brother is the older one. He has DMD and cannot move without a wheelchair. There is still no cure for the disease, but he is continuing his studies.”

“I want to become a good doctor and stand by everyone,” Karima said. “I want to fulfill my parents’ dreams and treat my disabled brother.”

Azad Rezaul Karim, a former chairman of the Naopara union parishad, said the community was thrilled by Karima’s admission. “She studied through great hardship,” he said. “Her father is a day laborer who runs the family by working for others and educates his children. As residents, we pray that Karima becomes a great doctor and serves her community and country.”
