NATORE, Bangladesh — Farzana Sharmin (Putul), the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) candidate for Natore-1 (Lalpur-Bagatipara), has resigned from four institutional posts to contest the upcoming election. She informed the media of the decision Tuesday evening.
Under the Representation of the People Order, a person holding any government office of profit cannot contest an election.
Sharmin has stepped down as legal adviser to the National University, chair of the governing body of Capital Law College, and independent director of Green Delta Life Insurance Ltd. and Dhaka Electric Supply Company Ltd. (DESCO), it was reported. She has formally tendered her resignations to those institutions by letter.
Sharmin said she resigned because of legal requirements. She added that she had not been able to devote sufficient time to those institutions because of her election commitments.
