A total of 1,471 candidates did not join their jobs even after passing the recruitment examination for assistant teachers in government primary schools and being finally recommended. Some received appointment letters but did not join in the set time, and others did not submit the required papers at all. Another 83 passed the examination but were denied appointment letters.
As a result, preparations are under way to issue a recruitment notice soon to ease the shortage of teachers, said Abdur Rahim, additional director general of the Directorate of Primary Education. Officials of the directorate’s policy and operations division confirmed this to the media on Wednesday.
Directorate sources said the notice for the Assistant Teacher Recruitment Examination, 2025, was issued in two phases for a total of 14,385 vacant posts. There were 1,080,080 applications, an average of about 75 candidates for each post.
In the first phase there were 745,929 applications for 10,219 posts in Rajshahi, Rangpur, Sylhet, Khulna, Barishal and Mymensingh divisions. In the second, 334,151 people applied for 4,166 posts in Dhaka and Chattogram divisions.
In all, 69,265 passed the written test and were selected for the oral examination. When the final results were published on 8 February, 14,384 were recommended for appointment.
According to the directorate, district-wise appointment orders were issued on 24 September, in several stages, followed by instructions to submit the required papers. Papers were submitted by 13,831 people; 552 did not submit them and one had died.
Of those who submitted papers, 13,748 received appointment letters. But 12,830 joined within the set time and 918 did not join despite having their letters. Counting the 553 who submitted no papers and these 918, a total of 1,471 did not take up the post.
Abdur Rahim said: “Many did not submit papers; they showed no interest at all. Many others did not join even with the appointment letter in hand. Perhaps they got jobs elsewhere and gave that priority. This happens in all government recruitment.”
But the large number who did not join has put some pressure on the directorate this time. He said a large recruitment process costs time and money, and when posts remain vacant after it, schools face a shortage of teachers. That is why a new recruitment notice is being prepared quickly.
