Police have recovered the headless, decomposed body of a van driver, Chan Mia alias Chand Ali, 55, five days after he went missing in Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga.
The body was recovered at about 9.30am on Monday, 19 October, beside the Kotchandpur road next to the Shahapur police camp in the upazila.
Chand Ali was the son of the late Jonab Ali of Baligarta para in Hasadah village.
According to his family, five days ago Chand Ali left home with his battery-run van to earn a living as he did every day, and never came back. Family members searched everywhere they could but found no trace of him. His battery-run van has not been found either.
Police and local sources said passers-by saw a mutilated, headless body lying beside the Kotchandpur road next to the Shahapur police camp on Monday morning and called the police. Officers from Jibannagar police station went to the scene and recovered the body. Relatives later identified it as Chand Ali’s from his clothes and other evidence. Police believe at first sight that he was killed by criminals to steal his battery-run van, and the body was dumped in a deserted place.
Confirming the incident, Jibannagar police station officer-in-charge Solaiman Sheikh said: “On receiving the information, police went to the scene quickly and recovered the headless, decomposed body. From the circumstances it appears to be a planned murder. We are investigating whether it was done to steal the van or over some other enmity.”
He said the body was being sent to the Chuadanga Sadar Hospital morgue for a post-mortem, and police had begun operations to arrest those involved.
