Mofazzal Hossain Lebu set out from his home in Dori Hamidpur village in Jamalpur on Friday morning to take his mother to live with him in Gazipur. With them were his daughter, Morjina Akter, and her five-year-old son. The journey of a few hours became their last.
At around noon on Friday (2 October), a Rajib Paribahan bus collided head-on with the CNG-run auto-rickshaw carrying them in the Dapunia Hargujir Par area of the Rahmatpur bypass road in Mymensingh city. Seven people were killed, including four people from four generations of one family.
The four were Rashida Begum, 70; her son Mofazzal Hossain Lebu, 50; his daughter Morjina Akter, 25; and her five-year-old son. The other three killed were the auto-rickshaw driver Sujan Ali, 44, Akram Ali, 51, and his wife Momota Begum, 39.
“He had come to take our mother to stay with him. His daughter and grandson insisted on going too, and he set out with the three of them. They never knew this trip would be their last,” said Mofazzal’s younger brother, Mobarak Hossain.
Witnesses said the crash made a huge noise. The auto-rickshaw was crushed, with passengers trapped inside. One witness, Nazim Uddin, said he tried to rescue a woman and a child, but they died as they were being prepared to go to hospital.
There were scenes of grief at the morgue of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, and the bodies were handed to relatives that night after legal formalities. On Saturday morning the four family members were buried side by side in Dori Hamidpur Bhatipara village in Ranagachha union, Jamalpur, the home they had left the day before.
Police believe the two vehicles were speeding on a bend and the drivers lost control. Kotwali Model police station officer-in-charge Shibirul Islam said the necessary legal steps were being taken.
The crash has raised questions about speed control, drivers’ conduct, vehicle fitness and documents, and safety on the accident-prone stretch, which an investigation is expected to settle. Dori Hamidpur and the surrounding villages are in mourning.
