Yashaswini Raje Singh, daughter of Vikram Singh, a former BJP legislator from Uttar Pradesh, has been detained amid the protests in Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. She herself says she was detained for sitting in a park.

Hindustan Times reported on Saturday that she was detained while sitting in a park near Gurdwara Bangla Sahib in Delhi and is being held at Keshavpuram police station. She wrote on X: “Detained near Bangla Sahib for sitting in a park. Currently being held at Keshavpuram police station.” She became widely known during the student protests of June and July, which demanded the resignation of the then union education minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, over alleged question paper leaks.

Delhi has in effect been turned into a fortress over the protest at Jantar Mantar led by Abhijit Dipke. More than 40,000 members of Delhi police and the central armed police forces have been deployed, and barricades and spiked barriers to puncture vehicle tyres have been put in place. The protesters are demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, alleging irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter rolls.

Vikram Singh, an influential BJP leader, is a former legislator for the Fatehpur Sadar seat in Uttar Pradesh. Yashaswini actively supported the protests at that time, and also the CJP’s campaign.
