Eliza Zaman is the candidate of BNP and its alliance in the by-election for a reserved women’s seat in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad that was declared vacant, BNP media cell member Shairul Kabir Khan said.

The decision was also announced on Monday afternoon, 26 October, in a statement signed by BNP acting secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

Eliza Zaman is a member of BNP’s central executive committee and joint convener of the Pirojpur district BNP. She is also organising secretary of the central committee of Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal, the party’s women’s wing.

Ferdousi Ahmed Mishti resigned as an MP on 1 October on the prime minister’s instructions, after allegations that she was involved in the attack, vandalism and looting at the Raddha MCH-FP health centre in Mirpur.

The Election Commission then began preparing for a by-election to the seat. Under the schedule it announced on 12 October, today, 26 October, is the last day for filing nominations. Nominations will be scrutinised on 27 October, the deadline for withdrawal is 1 November and symbols will be allotted on 2 November. Voting is set for 12 November. If only one valid candidate remains after scrutiny and withdrawal, that candidate will be declared elected unopposed.

BNP began distributing party nomination forms for the by-election on 16 October. A total of 70 women collected forms and 68 of them applied.

Eliza Zaman had sought to contest the 13th parliamentary election from Pirojpur-1 (Pirojpur, Nazirpur and Indurkani) with the party’s sheaf of paddy symbol, but did not get the nomination for the 12 January vote.

Her father, Sardar Sultan Mahmud, was a former member of parliament.
