Students of Government Titumir College in the capital have protested demanding a cut in hall fees. Gathering in front of the college’s hall gate on Monday night, July 20, they chanted slogans and demanded the fees be revised.

The students allege that while the hall fee at other colleges affiliated with Dhaka Central University is 6,000 taka, at Titumir College it has been set at 8,000 taka. Many students are falling into financial difficulty paying the higher fee, they said.

The protesters said that although the college administration promised to reduce the fee after several days of agitation, the new notice cut only 200 taka. In their words, this amounts to a “mockery” and “deception” of students. One student told the media: “We submitted a memorandum to reduce the hall fee. But the administration wanted to settle it by calling in two of our student leaders. Two student leaders cannot decide for thousands of Titumir College students. The students of Titumir College will decide.”

He added that the administration had first promised to set the fee at 7,000 taka but later cut only 200 taka, from 8,000 to 7,800 taka. “We consider this a kind of deception and mockery of students.”

The students demanded the hall fee be reset at 6,000 taka, that all fees be brought to a reasonable level, and that the college principal resign. They announced they would intensify their protest until their demands are met.
