National Citizen Party (NCP) chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari was attacked again in the Sylhet region amid the party’s continuing programmes. The ambush took place as he was returning to Sylhet along the road between Sylhet Sadar and Jaintapur upazila after completing a “July march” programme.
Patwari posted video of the attack on his verified Facebook page on the night of Friday (31 July). The glass of the passenger vehicle was smashed in the attack, and at least two people, including Nasiruddin Patwari, were bloodied by the broken glass.
A statement to the same effect was also issued from the verified Facebook page of NCP central convener Nahid Islam.
He wrote that “BNP’s armed men” had again attacked the NCP convoy as it returned from the July march in Jaintapur, Sylhet, smashing the vehicle’s glass and injuring Nasiruddin Patwari and one other person with the broken glass. BD Global Times could not independently verify who carried out the attack, and the BNP could not immediately be reached for a response to the allegation.
Zubair Ahmed, Sylhet metropolitan convener of the NCP-affiliated student body Chhatra Shakti, who was in the convoy, said that after a roadside rally in Jaintapur, a group of 40 to 50 people threw bricks and stones at the central leaders’ moving convoy after it crossed Haripur Bazar and before reaching Chiknagul, breaking the vehicle’s glass and injuring Nasiruddin Patwari and Redwan.
Several incidents of violence have occurred over successive days around the NCP’s political tour of the Sylhet division. Earlier, after a march in Habiganj, central leaders of the party were attacked and there were incidents of chase and counter-chase in which several Chhatra Shakti leaders were injured. The convoy was later attacked in Golapganj, Sylhet as well. With this recent attack in Jaintapur, the NCP convoy has been attacked three times in a matter of days in the Sylhet region.
