Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Mia Golam Parwar has accused the government of mismanagement, inefficiency and short-sightedness, saying these have driven electricity and gas shortages to their worst point. He warned that if the government failed to meet the public’s basic daily needs, it would have to accept responsibility for whatever followed.

In a statement on Thursday, the Jamaat secretary general said the country had recently faced acute electricity and gas shortages. Supply falling short of demand had increased public hardship, he said, with extensive load shedding since Sunday.

He cited figures showing load shedding of 3,671 megawatts on Aug 9, 3,757MW on Aug 10, 3,465MW on Aug 11 and 3,382MW on Aug 12, an average shortfall of about 3,500MW over recent days.

Describing the gas shortage as similarly severe, Golam Parwar said that on Aug 12 supply stood at 2.03 billion cubic feet against demand of 3.8 billion cubic feet. He attributed the shortages to government mismanagement, inefficiency and short-sightedness, along with corruption and politicisation in various institutions, and said they were disrupting daily life.

Arguing that public anger over the energy shortage was rising, the Jamaat secretary general said the Bangladesh Palli Bidyut Association had written to police headquarters seeking tighter security at 80 rural electricity cooperatives across the country. This, he said, illustrated the government’s failure to manage electricity supply.
