Allegations have surfaced that a BNP party office was set up after demolishing a government-funded toilet at Dighi Bazar in South Charbagya village of Charjubili union in Subarnachar upazila of Noakhali. Ordinary people and traders visiting the market have fallen into severe suffering because of this.

Local sources said the two-room toilet had been built for public use near the bridge area of Dighi Bazar at an estimated cost of Tk8 lakh under the LGSP project. Recently, it was demolished and two rooms were built, and a BNP office signboard bearing the picture of former Noakhali-4 lawmaker Mohammad Shahjahan was hung there. The structure is currently locked.

Locals have accused former No. 5 ward BNP vice president Md Kamal and BNP leader Md Rajib over the incident. Asked about the matter, BNP leader Rajib said, “Kamal demolished the toilet, and later I built a room there. But I do not know who hung the signboard, and no party activities have been carried out there yet.”

Ordinary traders and locals expressed anger over the construction of a political office by occupying government khas land and a public-use facility. They demanded an immediate investigation, recovery of government property and action against the occupiers.

Meanwhile, calling the matter harmful to the party’s image, former Charjubili union BNP president Mohammad Helal said the incident would be looked into and necessary organizational and administrative steps would be considered.
