DHAKA — Shops and shopping malls in Bangladesh will stay open until 10 p.m. instead of 7 p.m. from May 12 through Eid ul-Adha, the Bangladesh Shop Owners Association said.

The association’s president, Helal Uddin, confirmed the change in a video message Thursday, May 7.

“For Eid ul-Adha we had asked the government to allow shops and shopping malls to stay open until 11 p.m. instead of 7 p.m.,” Helal Uddin said. “The government has permitted us to stay open until 10 p.m. We have also been instructed not to use excessive decorative lighting or electricity.”

The government had ordered shops to close by 6 p.m. from April 3 because of the energy crisis. After meetings with business associations, the closing time was extended by one hour to 7 p.m. from April 5.
