A 60-year-old schoolteacher has been beaten to death in Bangladesh’s Rajshahi city, allegedly by his son following a family dispute, police said. The killing took place on Monday morning in the Meherchandi Bera Mosque area of the city.

The accused, the victim’s 27-year-old son, is a master’s student in the social work department at Rajshahi University, police said.

According to witnesses and local sources, an argument had been going on since Monday morning between the son and his parents over various family matters. At one point in the altercation, police said, the son became enraged and struck his father on the head with a piece of wood that was in the house. Critically injured, the father died on the spot from excessive bleeding.

After confirming his father’s death, the son quickly fled the scene, witnesses said. Local residents later informed police, who reached the spot and recovered the body.

The officer-in-charge of Chandrima police station, Monirul Islam, said police had gone to the scene after being alerted by local residents. The body has been sent to the morgue at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, he said, adding that preparations were under way to file a murder case at the station.
