Saying that honest and dedicated politicians are turning away from politics because there has been no qualitative change in politics after July, Bangladesh Labour Party chairman Dr Mostafizur Rahman Iran said the dominance of fraudsters, looters, money- and human-traffickers, drug dealers and black-market syndicates is now everywhere. Because of a race to acquire wealth at any cost, politics has now become a profitable business, he said. Bureaucrats, labourers and capitalists had infiltrated politics and destroyed its character, and those who plundered thousands of crores of taka in state assets and money had become members of parliament, he added.
He made the remarks as chief guest at a representatives’ meeting organised by the Barishal district and city Labour Party at the party office on College Avenue on Saturday. “We do not want grabbing politics and the democracy of plunder,” Dr Iran said. “The ’36 July’ mass uprising was the ultimate harvest of the students’, workers’ and people’s movement to end the politics of money, weapons, black money, muscle power, motorbikes and thugs. We will give our lives but not give up July. The Labour Party will stay active on the streets to implement the referendum verdict to realise the spirit of July.” He said the people had taken to the streets against autocracy and fascism, demanding a democratic order and a new settlement, and had buried fascism and hegemony.
The meeting, chaired by Barishal city Labour Party president Md Sohel Mahmud, had as special guests Bangladesh Labour Party vice-chairman Advocate Zohra Khatun Jui and Bangladesh Youth Mission convener Salman Khan Badsha. Barishal district Labour Party president Engineer Shahadat Hossain, general secretary Md Shahjahan Howlader and other leaders also spoke.
