A possible agreement between the United States and Iran has reached a near-final stage. But differences between the two countries over releasing part of Iran’s frozen assets remain a major obstacle. On Thursday (4 June), a source connected to the matter confirmed this to the Saudi outlet Al Arabiya.

The report said management of Iran’s frozen funds has become one of the main points of contention in the final phase of the talks. The source claimed that US President Donald Trump has told mediators he is not willing to release any money for Iran before an agreement is signed.

Under the proposal on the table, a special fund could be set up to hold Iran’s frozen assets. Once the agreement takes effect, money would be released and managed through that fund. According to diplomatic sources, talks between Tehran and Washington have made significant progress and the framework of the agreement is nearly final. But the terms and timeline for releasing the frozen assets have not yet been agreed.

Resolving the question of the frozen funds at this stage of the deal could mark important progress toward ending a long-standing impasse between the two countries. But Washington’s tough stance on releasing the money is being seen as the last major hurdle to completing the agreement.
