A video of a participant chanting the “Joy Bangla” slogan during a BNP motorcycle rally in Madaripur on August 15 has sparked discussion in local political circles after spreading on social media.
The incident occurred around 11:08 a.m. on Saturday in front of the Eidgah field in Madaripur municipality during a motorcycle rally organized by BNP and its allied organizations.
Party activists said BNP supporters had taken a precautionary stance amid concerns of unrest surrounding a mourning gathering announced by the banned Awami League. As part of this alert, district Krishak Dal joint convener Mohammad Abul Bashar Matubbar led the motorcycle rally through various city roads.
During the rally, participants chanted various slogans. At one point, one person was heard shouting “Joy Bangla” — a slogan closely identified with the Awami League. Video of the moment quickly spread online.
Multiple attempts to reach Matubbar for comment were unsuccessful. District Krishak Dal member secretary Ahiduzzaman Khan Ohid said he was not aware of who organized the rally and that the matter is being looked into.
District Krishak Dal convener Oliur Rahman Dorji said legal action will be taken against anyone from their party who used such slogans.
Police increased surveillance in key areas of Madaripur to maintain law and order around August 15.
Madaripur Sadar police station officer-in-charge Abul Kalam Azad said police had no information about the slogan. He said if anyone chanted it during the rally, the matter could be unlawful and will be investigated.
