Police have arrested eight people, including a union Awami League president of the banned party, in a special drive in Madaripur in a case filed under anti-terrorism law.
They were arrested from various areas of the Sadar upazila on Saturday night and early Sunday.
Those arrested include Israfil Faraji, president of the Kenduya union Awami League in Madaripur Sadar upazila, and Jahangir Jomaddar, general secretary of the Ghotmajhi union Awami League.
Abul Kalam Azad, officer-in-charge of Madaripur Sadar Model police station, said police had carried out the special drive over allegations that leaders and activists of the banned Awami League might carry out sabotage in various areas of the Sadar upazila. As part of it, eight people were arrested, including the presidents and general secretaries of two banned union Awami League units. They were shown arrested in a case filed under anti-terrorism law and sent to a Madaripur court.
He said regular drives would continue against those involved in such activities.
