A man named Julhas Mondal (42) has drowned in a river while bathing his horse in Jamalpur’s Madarganj. The incident occurred on Friday (5 June) afternoon in the Jharkata river on the border of Adarvita union of the upazila and Kahetpara of Melandaha upazila. Julhas Mondal was the son of the late Anar Mondal of the Porabari area of Adarvita union, and had made his living driving a horse cart for about 15 years.
According to local and family sources, Julhas Mondal went, as he did every day, to bathe his horse in the Jharkata river on the east side of his home on Friday afternoon, accompanied by his only son, Rahat (6). Leaving the boy on the bank, he went into the water with the horse. At one point Julhas went under; the horse came back to the bank, but he did not resurface. Seeing his father go under, little Rahat ran home to alert the family. Relatives and locals rushed to the scene and searched for a long time, recovering Julhas’s body from the river with a fishing net about an hour later.
On receiving the news, Shyamganj-Kalibari police outpost in-charge Ziaur Rahman visited the scene with his force. The dead man’s nephew Sumon said his uncle went to bathe the horse in the river every day, and that he went into the water with the horse that day too, but although the horse returned to the bank, his uncle could not get up, and his body was recovered after a long search. Madarganj Model police station officer-in-charge (OC) Snehashish Roy said police were sent to the scene as soon as the incident was known and that necessary steps would be taken.
