A video purportedly showing Saidul Islam, president of the Gopinathpur union BNP in Akkelpur upazila of Joypurhat, using drugs has gone viral on the social-media platform Facebook. Over the incident, he has been temporarily relieved of his party post. At the same time, the Gopinathpur union BNP committee has been dissolved and a new 31-member convening committee formed. The information was given in a notification from the Akkelpur upazila BNP on Saturday night.

According to party sources, a video purportedly showing Gopinathpur union BNP president Saidul Islam using drugs spread on Facebook last Tuesday. After the video went viral and sparked widespread discussion and criticism in the area, the upazila BNP issued him a show-cause notice that same Tuesday night and formed a five-member committee to investigate the incident properly.

On Saturday night, after receiving the investigation committee’s report, the upazila BNP, as an organisational measure, temporarily relieved Saidul Islam — the BNP leader whose alleged drug-use video had gone viral — of his post as president. The Gopinathpur union BNP committee was also dissolved, and a 31-member convening committee was formed with SM Kaykobad as convener. The release letter said Saidul Islam had been temporarily relieved of his post as president of the Gopinathpur union BNP for breaching party discipline, and that if anyone engaged with him in any party activity, it would be treated as that person’s individual responsibility.

On the matter, Saidul Islam said the spread of the video was orchestrated. An investigation had been held on Saturday afternoon, he said, and most people had spoken in his favour. After the investigation committee members left, he had been temporarily relieved of his post, he said, adding that he had received the letter by mobile phone and had also learnt that the union BNP committee had been dissolved.

Akkelpur upazila BNP president Kamruzzaman Komol said Saidul Islam had been issued a show-cause notice over the spread of the drug-use video, and a five-member committee had been formed to investigate. After receiving the investigation committee’s report, he had been temporarily relieved of his post as union BNP president, and the Gopinathpur union BNP committee had been dissolved and a new convening committee formed.
