French police recovered a painting by the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso during a raid searching for drugs at a house in a Paris suburb, the country’s prosecutors said on Saturday, according to the news agency AFP.

The public prosecutor’s office in Créteil, southeast of Paris, said the painting had been found ‘during a search conducted as part of an investigation into drug trafficking.’ It added that an investigation had been opened over the case on charges of theft and dealing in stolen goods.

The prosecutor’s office said four people had been brought before a court on Friday for an immediate hearing on charges of involvement in the case.

According to the French newspaper Le Parisien, investigators carried out the search on Monday in Champigny-sur-Marne, a town east of Paris. The paper said that, along with the Picasso painting, police had seized cannabis, expensive clothing and several thousand euros.

The Créteil prosecutor’s office said the painting had been confirmed as a genuine work by the Spanish artist, but did not say which specific painting it was.
