Flood-affected farmers in Madhyanagar upazila, Sunamganj, protested on Tuesday after alleging that the list of beneficiaries for government disaster relief included non-farmers and was compiled through nepotism.

Government assistance was allocated for haor farmers affected by flooding, but genuine victims said they were excluded while relatives of local elected representatives and unaffected individuals were included. They also alleged that multiple members of the same families appeared on the list.

The distribution of relief for Madhyanagar Sadar and Chamardani unions began on Tuesday morning. Shortly after it started, farmers whose names were not on the list voiced their anger. Several farmers from Chamardani union filed verbal complaints with acting UNO Sanjoy Ghosh, leading to a brief halt in distribution before it resumed.

Protesting farmers chanted “We do not accept the irregular list and never will” and submitted names of individuals they alleged were improperly included, demanding an investigation.

Acting UNO Sanjoy Ghosh said that if irregularities occurred in preparing the list, the concerned union chairmen and members would be held responsible. He said an investigation would be conducted if a written complaint is received.
