A local BNP leader was shot in the back by attackers in a dispute over a sand quarry in Bheramara upazila, Kushtia.
The victim, Nasirul Biswas (50), is the general secretary of Ward 4 BNP in Bahirchar union and a local sand trader. The attack took place on Sunday afternoon at the 16 Dag Hardinge Bridge area in Bahirchar union.
Local and police sources said Biswas was attacked by assailants when he went to the Hardinge Bridge area to sell sand. He was shot in the back and also slashed on the leg with a sharp weapon. Locals rushed him to Kushtia General Hospital.
Hospital resident medical officer Iqbal Hasan said a bullet was removed from the victim’s back. He also had injuries on his leg but is now out of danger.
Bahirchar union BNP acting president Johurul Islam Bijli said Biswas manages the party’s sand business in the Hardinge Bridge area and was attacked when he went there to sell sand.
Bheramara Police Station officer-in-charge Muhammad Zahedur Rahman said the attack is believed to be linked to a dispute over the Khutibagari sand quarry. Eyewitnesses reported seven attackers, six of whom were masked. The one unmasked attacker was not recognized. An investigation is underway, but no formal complaint has been filed yet.
