Police have arrested Sohel Rana Pabon, chairman of Bahadurpur Union Parishad in Veramara upazila, Kushtia, and vice president of the banned Awami Jubo League’s upazila unit, along with his brother Rubel Mahmud Ratan, president of the union Swechchhasebak League.
They were arrested around 11:30 p.m. Friday near the union parishad office adjacent to Kuchiyamora Bazar.
According to Veramara police station sources, police had information that Pabon and Ratan had long been secretly conducting party activities. Acting on intelligence that they were covertly organizing activists ahead of August 15, police carried out an operation. Members of Veramara police station and the Kuchiyamora camp subsequently arrested the two near the union parishad office and took them to the station.
Kuchiyamora camp in-charge Md Abdus Salam said that on Friday night, Awami League activists led by Pabon and his brother Ratan were preparing khichuri near the union parishad office to mark August 15. Upon receiving information about the gathering, the two were arrested with the assistance of Veramara police station.
Veramara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Muhammad Zahedur Rahman said both men were active leaders of the banned Awami League. They were arrested to maintain law and order after intelligence indicated they were organizing activists. Further legal action will follow in accordance with the law.
