Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has strongly rejected US Vice President JD Vance’s assertion that the United States is Israel’s only powerful ally. Citing strong support from India, Netanyahu made clear that Israel has many friends around the world and is receiving “incredible” support from India’s 1.4 billion people.
Netanyahu made the remarks in a recent interview with Fox News. Facing intense global criticism over Israeli military operations in Gaza, Iran, and Lebanon, the Israeli leader pointed to India’s stance as a significant diplomatic shield.
“We have some other friends, like a small country called India,” Netanyahu said. “There are 1.4 billion people there, and the support we’re getting from ordinary people is incredible. On Facebook in particular, there has been a flood of support for Israel from Indians.”
Netanyahu added: “Having respect for someone doesn’t mean I have to agree with everything Vance says. In many countries, anti-Israel or anti-Jewish propaganda on social media has been turned into a fashion. But the picture behind the scenes is completely different. Top leaders of many countries personally call me, sign bilateral agreements, and even request that the Israeli military teach them its strategies.”
Several weeks ago, Vance warned Israel at a White House press conference that it would be unwise to antagonize “its only remaining powerful ally” — the United States.
Vance made the comment while backing a memorandum of understanding signed between the US and Iran aimed at ending hostilities. The agreement included a provision for Israeli troop withdrawal from Lebanon, which Israel has not yet accepted.
On this point, Netanyahu claimed that several Christian-majority villages in southern Lebanon had requested to be incorporated under Israeli protection to escape Hezbollah, which he said was the reason for Israel’s continued presence there. Regardless of the situation in Lebanon, the Israeli prime minister directly rejected Vance’s claim of unchallenged American supremacy in Israel’s diplomatic relationships by invoking India’s name.
