The U.S. Senate has passed a bill imposing sanctions on Russia. If it becomes law, U.S. President Donald Trump could impose 100 percent tariffs on the top five buyers of Russian oil, including India and China.
Against this backdrop, Congress MP and leader Pawan Khera launched a sharp attack on the Modi government. Speaking to the media in Prayagraj, he asked: “Is India really free?”
He said someone from abroad was “blackmailing” India — imposing conditions on which country it may buy oil from, and how much.
“Those in this country who go around claiming to be the ‘Vishwaguru’ should answer on this,” Khera said. “But they don’t have the courage to face such questions in Parliament, because they are afraid of being accountable to the people on anything.”
The U.S. Senate has passed a bill to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent, or sanctions, on the top countries involved in buying Russian oil and gas. Amid this international, political and economic pressure, the main opposition Congress has put the central government in the dock over India’s independent foreign policy and its stance.
