At least six people were killed in a landslide in eastern Mumbai, and four to five others may remain trapped under debris, officials said. Rescue teams are searching with victim-detection cameras.
The landslide occurred at 3:48am on Wednesday (August 12) at Gausia Chawl in Ghatkopar’s Cherag Nagar area, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation fire service.
Initial reports said part of a small hill collapsed onto two or three houses, trapping five to six people. BMC mayor Ritu Tawde visited and announced compensation for victims’ families.
Two injured people, Sohel Ansari, 18, and Mohammad Ansari, 14, were rescued and hospitalised; both were out of danger.
Mumbai fire services, Mumbai police and India’s National Disaster Response Force are conducting the rescue.
