There was much talk of high ticket prices even before the World Cup, and around the final those prices have risen further. Last-minute final tickets were selling for $10,000 to as much as $60,000. On Saturday, the cheapest ticket behind the goal on FIFA’s official ticketing website was priced at $6,411.25 — about 8 lakh taka in Bangladeshi currency — but all such tickets sold out within hours. The cheapest tickets then reached about $10,000; these upper-deck corner seats cost about 12 lakh taka in Bangladeshi currency. Tickets for seats near the pitch cost about $16,000, while special hospitality-package tickets rose to about $60,000, equivalent to about 74 lakh taka.
The same trend was seen on the resale platforms SeatGeek and StubHub, where upper-deck tickets started at about $10,000 and some lower-bowl seats reached about $35,000. A big reason for fans’ interest in this final is that Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal are meeting on the World Cup stage for the first time; it is also considered Messi’s possible last World Cup match. Argentina play the final aiming for their fourth World Cup title, and have the chance to become the first team since 1962 to win two World Cups in a row — Brazil last won back-to-back titles in 1958 and 1962. Spain, meanwhile, take the field aiming for their second World Cup, after 2010.
Messi has so far scored 8 goals and made 4 assists this tournament; it is his third World Cup final. A Finalissima between Copa America champions Argentina and Euro champions Spain had been due last March before the World Cup, but the match was cancelled because of the Middle East conflict. In the end, the two sides meet on the World Cup’s biggest stage.
