Online activist Sadikur Rahman Khan argued in a Facebook post that the July 2024 uprising was driven by student leaders and the public rather than BNP.

In the post on Wednesday evening, Khan said BNP had previously brought a large crowd to Dhaka at Tarique Rahman’s call but alleged that the crowd dispersed quickly after police intervention. Those claims were his political opinion and were not independently verified.

He said people had responded instead to calls by student leaders Nahid Islam, Asif Mahmud, Hasnat Abdullah and Akhtar Hossain, and argued that July’s history could not be erased through what he called a false documentary.

Khan alleged that the Hasina government began to lose moral authority after Nahid Islam’s one-point demand on Aug. 3, and that people took control of Dhaka’s streets on Aug. 5. He said more than 200 people were killed that day. These statements were made in his post and are not independently verified in the report.

The post reflected a dispute over who led and should be represented in accounts of the July uprising.
