The Pentagon, the US defence department, is facing growing financial pressure as the Iran war pushes up fuel prices. According to US defence-department figures, the military’s average refined-fuel price was 154.14 dollars per barrel in October. By April it had risen to 195.72 dollars. Fuel prices rose during the Iran war, which could mean more than a billion dollars in unexpected extra costs this year to operate military aircraft, tanks and other equipment. The defence department is reported to use about 80 million barrels of fuel a year.
Military leaders are also grappling with rising civilian fuel and commercial-airfare costs. Because troops often rely on commercial flights, rental cars and personal vehicles for training and other activities, the rise in fuel prices is putting additional strain on the budget. As a result, travel spending has come under intense review. The report said that, at least since April, some units have significantly cut or cancelled travel for training and other events to keep costs under control.
