A college student, Md Karim, 18, has been injured by gunfire from unidentified attackers in the Manikdi area under Cantonment police station in the capital. He is a second-year higher secondary student at Mirpur Bangla College.
The incident happened at about 12.15am on the night of Monday, 27 July. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in a serious condition.
His father, Rafiqul Islam, said the family lives at Amtala in Manikdi. He had sent his son Karim out that night to buy a mosquito coil from a shop. Karim bought the coil from a shop in the lane, spent some time with a friend named Tuhin and was returning home alone. As he was passing in front of a house known locally as the “32 owners’ building” at Amtala, shots were fired indiscriminately from the darkness. Karim was hit by two bullets in the legs.
Local people then informed the family, who rescued him and took him to Kurmitola Multicare Specialized Hospital, and from there to Dhaka Medical. Doctors operated that night and removed a bullet from his right leg. The bullet in the left leg had passed through at the time of the incident.
He added that doctors sent Karim home after treatment that night. The family does not know who was responsible. Karim has no dispute with anyone in the area.
Citing the doctor, the inspector in charge of the Dhaka Medical police camp, Md Faruk, said Cantonment police had been informed of the incident and were investigating.
