Police have arrested Chameli Akter, 25, the main accused in the case filed over the alleged abetment of the suicide of Mariam Akter Munni, a housewife in Barlekha, Moulvibazar. Chameli Akter is the dead woman’s sister-in-law, and was arrested in Mohammadpur, Dhaka.
She was brought to Barlekha police station on Saturday (September 19) morning after the arrest. She had been arrested at around 7pm on Friday (September 18) in an operation carried out with the help of Mohammadpur police station in Dhaka.
Chameli Akter is the daughter of the late Yeasin Ali of Muriragul village in Barlekha upazila.
Police sources said Munni’s mother, Renu Begum, filed a case at Barlekha police station on the night of September 5 over her daughter’s death. The case alleges that Munni took her own life after being subjected to abuse over dowry. Six people are named in the case, including Munni’s husband, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, brother-in-law and his wife. Five more people were named as unidentified accused.
After the case was filed, police began operations to arrest the accused who had absconded. The location of the accused was identified with the help of information technology. A police team then carried out an operation led by Barlekha police station’s SI Sheikh Kamrul Islam and the case’s investigating officer, SI Md Abdul Karim.
Police said Chameli Akter was arrested from the Basila area of Mohammadpur on Friday evening, at the end of a roughly 48-hour operation carried out with the help of Mohammadpur police station.
Barlekha police station’s officer-in-charge, Moniruzzaman Khan, confirmed the arrest and said a special police team had carried out an operation of about 48 hours in the Basila area of Mohammadpur before detaining her. She was brought to Barlekha police station on Saturday morning, and was sent to court under the rules after being questioned about the case.
