Vegetable and fish prices have fallen in the capital’s markets. With more seasonal and winter vegetables coming in, most vegetables are Tk 10 to 20 a kilo cheaper than last week. Rui, katla, tilapia and koi have also become cheaper at the fish markets, while chicken and egg prices are unchanged.

The picture emerged from a visit to Karwan Bazar and several nearby markets in the capital on Friday (6 November).

Green chillies are now selling at Tk 40 to 60 a kilo, aubergine at Tk 60, snake gourd at Tk 40, okra at Tk 30, bottle gourd at Tk 50 to 60 and papaya at Tk 20.

Pointed gourd is selling at Tk 30 a kilo, taro at Tk 50, flat beans at Tk 50, cauliflower at Tk 25 and cabbage at Tk 20.

Traders said the supply of seasonal and winter vegetables has increased, and with supply steady, the price of almost every kind of vegetable is down on last week.

“Supply is good in the market now, and more seasonal vegetables are coming in,” said Rahman, a vegetable seller. “So almost every vegetable is cheaper than last week.”

Karim, a shopper, said vegetables were a little cheaper than last week, especially cauliflower, cabbage and flat beans, which would bring his market spending down somewhat. “But it would be better for ordinary people if all prices came down further,” he said.

Some fish have also become cheaper. Tilapia is now selling at Tk 180 a kilo, pangas at Tk 180 to 200 and koi at Tk 200. Tilapia and koi are each down Tk 20 a kilo on last week, and rui and katla have also fallen markedly. Fish sellers said prices fell because supply in the market is good.

There is little change at the chicken market. Broiler chicken is selling at Tk 180 a kilo, Sonali chicken at Tk 320 and layer chicken at Tk 320.

Egg prices are also unchanged, at Tk 130 a dozen for red eggs and Tk 120 for white.

“It is a relief that vegetables and fish are cheaper,” said a shopper buying chicken. “But chicken and eggs are where they were. We have to buy everything at the market, so all prices need to come down.”
