“Science toys” will be added to the primary curriculum to teach children science through play, State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj has said.
He made the remarks on Sunday at a UNICEF-organised “Foundational Learning Action Tracker” event at a hotel in the capital’s Banani.
The state minister said science toys and various learning materials would be added to the curriculum to teach children science not just from books but hands-on and through enjoyment, and that a move had also been taken to set up “math labs” in primary schools.
Ensuring every child’s basic reading, writing and numeracy skills is one of the main goals of primary education, he said. To bring out-of-school children into education and keep pupils in school, free school uniforms and other support would be provided, with the free-uniform programme to be launched for the first time on 16 August. Steps had also been taken to correct the flaws and limitations identified in the mid-day meal pilot, he said.
