This World Cup has given birth to one new record after another. As well as being the first World Cup held with 48 teams, the tournament has seen various unique achievements by teams and players. After the four semifinalists were confirmed, another rare record has emerged.
For the first time in World Cup history, the top four teams in the FIFA rankings have reached the semifinals of the same tournament. This has never happened before since the ranking was introduced in 1992. The four teams that are part of this new chapter of history are Argentina, Spain, France and England.
Interestingly, each of these four semifinalists has the experience of winning the World Cup. Only twice before had a World Cup seen all four semifinalists being former world champions, at the 1970 and 1990 tournaments. The last four of the 1970 World Cup were the four former champions Brazil, Italy, Uruguay and West Germany, while the four semifinalists of the 1990 World Cup were West Germany, Argentina, Italy and England.
