Pakistan marked its 79th Independence Day with a range of events. The day began with a 31-gun salute in the capital, Islamabad, and 21-gun salutes in the provincial capitals. A changing-of-the-guard ceremony was held at Mazar-e-Quaid in Karachi. The country’s senior leadership used the occasion to stress stability, economic and institutional reform, and the establishment of regional and global peace.

In his message, President Asif Ali Zardari described independence not only as a historical achievement but as a responsibility to future generations. He emphasised strengthening the economy, creating jobs and building skills among young people, and pursuing good governance and institutional reform. He also restated Pakistan’s position on Kashmir and alleged that militant activity was being run from Afghan soil.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan had made significant progress towards economic stability over the past two and a half years. Remittances had risen by $11.3 billion over the past two years, he said. He set out information technology, innovation, sustainable development in industry and agriculture, and skills development as government priorities.

Every drop of water was a “red line” for Pakistan, he said, warning that his country would respond directly if India did not return to the correct path. He also committed to regional peace, a diplomatic solution to the Kashmir dispute and continued support for the people of Palestine and Kashmir.

The prime minister used the occasion to call on political parties and people from all walks of life to work together for national unity, development and prosperity.
