Prime Minister Tarique Rahman urged the Presidential Guard Regiment (PGR) to ensure security strategies do not push the head of government away from the people. He made the call at the PGR’s 51st founding anniversary ceremony at Dhaka Cantonment on Sunday afternoon.
“As the head of a democratic government, I want to maintain my trust and reliance on the faith and love of the people. Security strategies must be arranged in such a way that people do not feel disconnected from the head of government,” the prime minister said.
Noting that PGR members are specially selected and trained from the Bangladesh Army, he said: “Professionalism, loyalty, and discipline are expected as a matter of regulation. Your activities will reflect PGR’s competence and dedication — that is my expectation.”
The prime minister said the PGR has been nominated for the “National Standard” award this year in recognition of its discipline. “As a force, this is certainly a matter of great pride. I congratulate you once again,” he said.
Describing the armed forces as symbols of a nation’s courage and pride, Rahman said the army’s brave role in the 1971 Liberation War has inseparably linked it to Bangladesh’s glorious history.
He noted that beyond conventional challenges, multidimensional security threats have emerged from socio-economic, geopolitical, and technological developments. “Cyber warfare, electronic warfare, drone warfare, and information warfare — these new domains cannot be ignored,” he said, adding that the government has adopted plans to further modernize specialized forces including the PGR and the Special Security Force (SSF).
