A runner has died of a suspected cardiac arrest while participating in the Sonargaon 7.5K Run 2026, organized by the Sonargaon Runners club in Narayanganj district.
Tipu Sultan, 40, collapsed at the Baluadighi Par area on Friday morning, about halfway through the 7.5-kilometer course that began at Aminpur Maath near the historic Panam Nagar. Around 600 runners from across the country took part in the event.
The event’s medical team rushed Sultan to Sonargaon Seba General Hospital. As his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to Al Baraka Hospital in Madanpur, where the duty doctor declared him dead.
Sultan was a personal assistant to Ashraf Pradhan, a businessman and Mograpara union chairman candidate in Sonargaon.
Chief organizer Shimul Bhuiyan said the medical team responded immediately when Sultan fell ill. “But despite the doctors’ efforts, they could not save him,” he said.
Sultan’s sudden death cast a pall of grief over fellow runners and organizers at the event.
