Dhaka University (DU) administration has suspended four teachers over allegations of opposing the July uprising and, in one case, becoming a teacher without meeting the educational qualifications set out in the recruitment notice. The university administration has also formed an investigation committee against one of the teachers.
The decisions were made at a Syndicate meeting held Monday afternoon, August 31, chaired by Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr A B M Obaidul Islam.
Over allegations of opposing the July uprising, Institute of Education and Research professors Dr M Wahiduzzaman and Dr Muhammad Mahbubur Rahman, along with Sociology Department professor Dr Mashiur Rahman, have been suspended. The decision against them was made based on the recommendation of an investigation committee formed by the university administration. A tribunal has also been formed against them.
Separately, Music Department associate professor Dr Md Ziaur Rahman (Sayem Rana) has been suspended over allegations of becoming a teacher without meeting the educational qualifications set out in the recruitment notice. An investigation committee has been formed against him to look further into the matter. Dr Ziaur Rahman holds a bachelor’s (honors) and master’s degree in Islamic studies, and an MPhil and PhD in music. However, the recruitment notice for the teaching post in the Music Department required a bachelor’s and master’s degree specifically in music. The committee will investigate whether his appointment met the required educational qualifications.
