In Islam, the day of Jummah is regarded as the best and most blessed day of the week. Offering the Jummah prayer in congregation is obligatory (fard) for every adult, healthy and sane Muslim man. The Quran and Hadith place special emphasis on preparing for the prayer this day, arriving early at the mosque and listening attentively to the sermon (khutbah).
In the Holy Quran, Allah says: “O you who believe! When the call is made for prayer on the day of Jummah, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off trade. That is better for you, if only you knew.” (Surah Al-Jumu’ah: 9)
The Hadith mentions several recommended (sunnah) practices for the day of Jummah. These include taking a bath (ghusl), using a miswak, wearing clean and good clothes, applying fragrance and arriving at the mosque as early as possible. After entering the mosque, it is sunnah to offer two rak’ahs of Tahiyyatul Masjid, try to sit in the front rows, and, when the imam begins the khutbah, to remain completely silent and listen attentively.
Scholars say one should refrain from talking, using a mobile phone or disturbing others during the khutbah. Anyone entering the mosque while the khutbah is under way should offer two brief rak’ahs of Tahiyyatul Masjid and then sit down to listen.
The Quran also gives clear guidance on what to do after the Jummah prayer. Allah says: “Then when the prayer is ended, disperse in the land and seek Allah’s bounty (livelihood), and remember Allah much, that you may be successful.” (Surah Al-Jumu’ah: 10) The Prophet (peace be upon him) gave a stern warning against neglecting the Jummah prayer. It is narrated in the Hadith that Allah seals the heart of one who abandons three consecutive Jummah prayers without cause, and he becomes one of the heedless.
In Islamic teaching, the day of Jummah is described as a weekly Eid. So it is the duty of every Muslim to observe this day’s sunnah practices properly, arrive at the mosque on time and offer the Jummah prayer with full attention.
