Mohir Uddin, 60, fell ill after witnessing his two sons fighting over who could sit at the family’s grocery shop in Kaunia, Rangpur. He was later taken to the upazila health complex, where doctors pronounced him dead after examination.
The elderly Mohir Uddin fell ill around midday Thursday in the Ballabhbishu Gulshan Mor area of Shahidbagh union in the upazila.
Police, the deceased’s relatives and local residents said Mohir Uddin owned a grocery shop in the Gulshan Mor area. His younger son, Rashidul Islam, had fallen into addiction, and Mohir Uddin and his elder son, Maidul, had for some time been barring him from sitting at the shop. This led to an argument between Maidul and Rashidul around midday Thursday, which escalated into a physical fight. At that point, Mohir Uddin arrived at the shop carrying goods. He fell ill after witnessing his two sons fighting and fell from his motorcycle. He was rushed to the upazila health complex.
Police inspector (OC) Mohammad Shihab Uddin said Mohir Uddin’s body was kept in the corridor of the upazila health complex. Legal action would be taken if relatives filed a complaint, he said.
Sub-inspector (SI) Shariful Islam said relatives reported that Mohir Uddin suffered a heart attack after witnessing his sons’ fight. He had previously suffered two heart attacks. Doctors had advised him to have a stent fitted, but this had not been possible due to financial constraints.
