BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has paid tribute to the martyrs of the July-August mass uprising, saying he may not have seen the Great Wall of China but has seen the chest of Abu Sayed — standing like a wall as he took bullets.

Speaking at a candlelight vigil at the Central Shaheed Minar early Wednesday (July 1), Rizvi said: “I have not seen the Great Wall of China, but I have seen Abu Sayed’s chest. I have seen the sight of a person standing like the Great Wall and taking bullets. I have not seen the Himalayas, but I have seen Wasim Akram from Chittagong stand like the Himalayas, chest forward, and receive burning bullets.”

The event, titled “Memories Illuminated,” was organized by the ruling party’s student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal as part of a month-long program marking the second anniversary of the mass uprising that toppled the previous government.

The program began after midnight with the national anthem at the Shaheed Minar, followed by a candlelight ceremony in memory of the uprising’s martyrs. Chhatra Dal leaders and activists from central and various unit committees gathered at the Shaheed Minar grounds from 11 p.m. Tuesday.

Rizvi said: “This light is not just to dispel temporary darkness — it is a light that illuminates the world. The memory of July will enlighten us, ignite us, and inspire us to move forward in a new struggle against injustice.”

He added that Chhatra Dal was not born in easy times and had fought for 17 years. “The July mass uprising was the greatest expression of that continuous struggle. I am grateful to Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal for this,” he said.
