The Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) has ordered eight product variants from four companies withdrawn from the market for failing to meet the required Bangladesh Standard. Tests found excess preservatives, microbes harmful to human health, and deviations from the set standard. BSTI announced this in a notice on Monday.
BSTI said excess preservatives were found in the mango pickle of Fresh Garden Agro Resources. In the Belissimo-brand ice cream of Kazi Food Industries Limited, total milk solids-not-fat exceeded the Bangladesh Standard. Microbes harmful to the human body were found in Olive Bangladesh Limited’s Labonno-brand Milk Skin Lotion and Aloe Vera Skin Lotion; the Olive and Labonno-brand face washes Moringa Matcha, Foaming Milk and Tulsi; and the Labonno-brand Aloe Vera shampoo. In Deco Foods Limited’s Deco Fruit Funda-brand mango and orange soft-drink powders, vitamin C was found to be below the Bangladesh Standard.
BSTI said the companies concerned had already been issued rejection letters for the failed products, and had been directed to stop producing, selling and distributing them until their licences are renewed or approved. In the interest of public health and consumer protection, the firms were ordered to immediately withdraw the products from all distributors, dealers, retailers and markets nationwide. BSTI will monitor whether the directive is properly implemented, and said strict legal action would be taken under existing law against any company that defies it.
BSTI Director General (Secretary) Kazi Imdadul Haque said the institution is committed to ensuring people can buy quality products, calling access to quality goods a public right. He advised consumers to check the BSTI mark, licence number, and manufacturing and expiry dates before buying a product, and urged the public to report any complaints about product quality, adulteration, fraud or misuse of the BSTI mark promptly.
