Five children died in a tragic drowning accident while bathing in a river at Charchakla village in Debinagar union, Chapainawabganj Sadar upazila. The incident occurred around midday Friday, August 28, during Friday prayers.
According to locals and witnesses, the five children, all girls between the ages of 7 and 12 from the same village, had gone into the river together to bathe. At one point, one of them began to struggle in the water, and the others moved to help her. One by one, all five children were pulled under. Local residents later recovered their bodies. The incident has cast a pall of grief over the area.
Chapainawabganj Additional Superintendent of Police A.N.M. Wasim Firoz confirmed the incident, saying a police team had been dispatched to the scene and that necessary steps would be taken once they arrived.
