Israeli forces have pressed on with their assault on Gaza despite international pressure to halt the war, and the death toll among Palestinians risking their lives to collect aid is rising by the day. At least 71 Palestinians were killed in Israeli attacks while gathering aid on Wednesday, Al Jazeera reported.

Medical sources in Gaza said seven more people had died in hospitals from famine and malnutrition.

According to Gaza’s health ministry, at least 51 people were killed by Israeli fire on Wednesday as aid trucks entering northern Gaza moved toward the Zikim crossing point. More than 648 others were wounded.

The Nasser Medical Complex said another 20 people who had come for aid were killed near the so-called Morag Corridor close to Khan Younis in southern Gaza.

Aid distribution sites run by the U.S.- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which began operating in late May, have become death traps. More than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks at GHF centres so far.

The United Nations and other humanitarian agencies have sharply criticised the GHF for failing to deliver adequate aid and for the dire security situation at and around its distribution sites.

Gaza’s health ministry said 154 people, including 89 children, have died of malnutrition, most of them in recent weeks.

Despite soaring need, the amount of aid Israel is allowing into Gaza falls far short of what is required. The UN says Gaza needs at least 500 to 600 aid trucks a day to meet basic humanitarian needs; over the past four days, only 269 trucks have entered the territory.
